AFCON 2025: Super Eagles Beat Tanzania 2-1 in Group C Opener

Nigeria’s Super Eagles kicked off their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 campaign with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Tanzania’s Taifa Stars on Tuesday at the Complexe Sportif de Fes.

The encounter began at a high tempo, with Nigeria asserting early dominance, although Tanzania posed occasional threats on the counterattack.

Ajayi Breaks the Deadlock

The breakthrough came in the 36th minute when defender Semi Ajayi rose above his marker to power a header into the net from a perfectly weighted cross by Alex Iwobi.

The goal handed Nigeria a deserved 1-0 lead going into halftime, reflecting their control of the first half.

Tanzania Fight Back After the Break

Tanzania responded swiftly after the restart, putting Nigeria under immediate pressure.

Just two minutes into the second half, midfielder Charles M’Mombwa capitalised on a loose ball inside the box to restore parity, making it 1-1.

The equaliser briefly unsettled the Super Eagles, as the Taifa Stars grew in confidence and pushed forward in search of another goal.

Lookman Seals the Win for Nigeria

Nigeria regained the lead in the 55th minute through Ademola Lookman, who fired a clinical left-footed strike from outside the penalty area to put the Super Eagles back in front at 2-1.

The goal proved decisive, restoring Nigeria’s composure and shifting the momentum back in their favour.

Defensive Resilience Secures Three Points

In the closing stages, Tanzania pressed aggressively in search of a late equaliser, but Nigeria’s defence held firm.

Goalkeeper Daniel Nwabali, alongside defenders Calvin Bassey and Semi Ajayi, made several crucial interventions to deny the Taifa Stars clear-cut chances.

Despite sustained late pressure from Tanzania, the Super Eagles remained disciplined to secure all three points from the Group C opener.
