Ugochinyere warns against intimidation, urges IG to probe Imo police command

Rep Ugochinyere Urges IGP to Probe Imo Police Over Disrupted Civic Reception

The member representing Ideato Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Ikenga Ugochinyere, has called on Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun to investigate the activities of the Imo State Police Command, following the abrupt disruption of a civic reception organised in his honour.

Ugochinyere made the appeal on Tuesday evening during a reception hosted by residents of Ideato South Local Government Area. The event, initially scheduled at Central School II, Aforukwu, Isiekenesi, was relocated to the private residence of former PDP Chairman, Chief Bonny Ebili, after heavily armed policemen and an Armoured Personnel Carrier allegedly sealed off the original venue.

Disruption Sparks Outcry

The lawmaker condemned the police action, warning that such conduct undermines democratic values and civic freedoms. He described the intervention by local government officials and security agencies as an attempt to sabotage a peaceful civic gathering.

He stated, “It’s high time the Inspector General of Police looks into the Imo Police Command; we have suffered in their hands before; we don’t want to suffer again. We will not succumb to this. This energy they are using, if they use it to fight criminals, Imo State will be better.”

Ugochinyere further accused the state government and police command of sealing the venue without provocation, adding, “That is why my people are on the main road. I want every Nigerian to see the level we have degenerated, that’s why it’s yet an election year, madness has started in Imo again.”

Electoral Integrity Concerns

The lawmaker warned against electoral manipulation in Ideato, affirming that his constituents would resist any attempts to rig elections. He emphasized that intimidation during civic events threatens democracy, stating, “Ordinary civic reception; that means they don’t want people to come out for the election, and if you don’t want people to come for the election, then there is no democracy because you can’t call it democracy when it’s actually not.”

Ugochinyere assured his supporters that they would collectively oppose intimidation throughout the electioneering process while remaining focused on delivering basic amenities and infrastructure to improve living conditions in the constituency.

Efforts to reach Imo State Police Public Relations Officer Henry Okoye for comment were unsuccessful, as his phone line was reportedly switched off despite repeated attempts.
