Tinubu urged me to turn Plateau crisis into profit – Mutfwang

Tinubu Advises Plateau Governor to Turn Security Crisis into Economic Opportunity

Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, has revealed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu advised him to convert the security and economic challenges confronting the state into opportunities for growth and development.

Mutfwang made this disclosure on Friday during the groundbreaking ceremony of the Seed Potato Initiative at the Butura Cattle Ranch, operated by the Animal Science Training Centre, in Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State.

Seed Potato Initiative to Empower 20,000 Farmers

According to the governor, the agricultural project will span over 50 hectares and is expected to empower more than 20,000 farmers, positioning Plateau State as a major hub for seed potato production for local consumption and export.

Mutfwang, who hails from a potato-producing community, described the initiative as the fulfilment of a long-standing vision to unlock the state’s vast agricultural potential.

“I want everybody that is on the Plateau to prosper from the prosperity of Plateau, but anybody that will frustrate our prosperity, we will fight,” the governor declared.

“Turn the Crisis into Profit” — Tinubu’s Message

Quoting President Tinubu, Mutfwang said the President encouraged him to see Plateau’s challenges as a pathway to prosperity rather than setbacks.

“The President (Bola Ahmed Tinubu) has said to me that turn the crisis in Plateau into profit,” he stated.

The governor highlighted the economic value of potato farming, citing individuals who have built wealth from the crop, while urging farmers to embrace modern agricultural practices and cooperate with government policies.

Community Ranching and Livestock Reform

Mutfwang also unveiled plans to introduce community ranching as part of broader livestock reforms across the state.

He said the government aims to end open grazing on the Plateau within three years, noting that structured livestock management would enhance peace, productivity, and economic growth.

“In another three years, there will be no cows roaming around on the Plateau,” he said, calling on willing stakeholders to join the initiative.

Market Intervention and Export Drive

The governor further assured farmers that the state government would intervene in agricultural markets through the Plateau Commodity Marketing Company to prevent exploitation and guarantee fair pricing.

“We will intervene in the market in such a way that nobody will cheat our farmers. I look forward to the day that we will begin to export potatoes from Plateau State,” Mutfwang added.

Stakeholders Pledge Support

Earlier, the Commissioner for Agriculture, Samson Bugama, said the Seed Potato Initiative aligns with the state’s plan to boost food security, create jobs, and establish Plateau as a leading food-producing state in Nigeria.

The Chairman of Bokkos Local Government Area, Amalau Samuel Amalau, pledged the council’s full support, assuring that adequate security would be provided to ensure the success of the project.

Traditional rulers, farmers, and top government officials who attended the event expressed optimism that the initiative would significantly improve livelihoods and stimulate sustainable economic growth in Plateau State.
