President Bola Tinubu on Sunday praised the Nigerian Armed Forces for their rapid and decisive intervention in the Benin Republic following an attempted military coup in the neighbouring West African nation. The update, monitored by

, comes after loyalist forces—backed by Nigerian troops and air assets—successfully dislodged mutineers who briefly seized Benin’s national television station.
The coup plotters had claimed to have overthrown President Patrice Talon after taking control of the state broadcaster early Sunday morning. However, their attempt was short-lived as coordinated regional efforts contained the uprising.
Benin Requested Nigeria’s Military Assistance
According to a statement signed by Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy,
Bayo Onanuga, Benin’s government formally requested Nigeria’s support through two separate communications. The request followed the announcement made by Col. Pascal Tigri and his group, who declared the suspension of democratic institutions in the country.
The Beninese authorities asked for assistance in securing strategic areas after the mutineers attempted to undermine constitutional governance.
NAF Jets Took Control of Benin’s Airspace
Acting swiftly on the request, President Tinubu authorised the deployment of Nigerian Air Force fighter jets to take control of Benin’s airspace. The jets were tasked with helping loyalist forces flush out the coup plotters from key locations, including:
- The national television station
- A military camp occupied by the mutineers
- Other strategic security installations
Benin also requested Nigerian surveillance aircraft and ground forces “strictly for missions approved by the Beninese Command authority in support of the protection of constitutional institutions and the containment of armed groups.”
Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, confirmed that all requests were carried out as directed and that Nigerian troops were already present on the ground in Benin.
Intervention Aligned With ECOWAS Protocol
Tinubu, who currently serves as the Chairman of ECOWAS, emphasised that the operation complied fully with the bloc’s Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance.
He stated:
“Today, the Nigerian armed forces stood gallantly as a defender and protector of constitutional order in the Republic of Benin on the invitation of the government. Our armed forces acted within the ambit of the ECOWAS Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance. They have helped stabilise a neighbouring country and have made us proud of their commitment to sustaining our democratic values and ideals since 1999. Nigeria stands firmly with the government and people of the Republic of Benin.”
His remarks underscore Nigeria’s unwavering stance against unconstitutional changes of government within the sub-region—an effort consistently monitored and reported by
