Tinubu nominates ex-Rivers administrator Ibas, Dambazau, others as ambassadors

Tinubu Sends New Batch of Non-Career Ambassadorial Nominees to Senate for Confirmation

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has forwarded a fresh list of non-career ambassadorial nominees to the Senate, expanding his ongoing diplomatic appointments and filling key foreign mission positions. The announcement was made on Thursday during plenary after Senate President Godswill Akpabio read the president’s letter to lawmakers.

The new list features prominent figures, including the immediate past Sole Administrator of Rivers State and former Chief of Naval Staff, Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas; former presidential aide Ita Enang; former Imo State First Lady Chioma Ohakim; and a former Minister of Interior and ex-Chief of Army Staff, Abdulrahman Dambazau.

Senate to Fast-Track Screening

In his letter, President Tinubu urged the Senate to give swift and thorough consideration to the nominees to ensure Nigeria fills crucial diplomatic roles without delay.

Akpabio subsequently referred the list to the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs with a mandate to screen the nominees and submit its report within one week.

Part of a Larger Ambassadorial Appointment Wave

Earlier, **www.cjsoftflix.com** reported that Tinubu had already forwarded the names of 32 ambassadorial nominees to the Senate—days after submitting the first batch of three nominees.

The broader list includes notable personalities such as former INEC Chairman Mahmud Yakubu; former presidential aide under Goodluck Jonathan, Reno Omokri (Delta); and former Enugu State Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, among others.

According to a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu urged lawmakers to confirm 15 career ambassadors and 17 non-career ambassadors “expeditiously.”

Women Included in the Diplomatic Line-Up

Onanuga also disclosed that the list features four women among the career ambassadors and six women among the non-career nominees—demonstrating an effort toward gender representation in Nigeria’s foreign service.

Strategic Foreign Postings Ahead

The nominees are expected to be deployed to countries that maintain strong, strategic, and mutually beneficial ties with Nigeria. These include China, India, South Korea, Canada, Mexico, South Africa, Kenya, the UAE, Qatar, as well as permanent missions such as the United Nations, UNESCO, and the African Union.

All nominees will receive their official diplomatic postings after Senate confirmation, marking another step in Tinubu’s ongoing restructuring of Nigeria’s foreign relations architecture.
