Four Officers Arrested Over Killing
Confirming the development, the North West Provincial Police Command disclosed that the officers, aged between
25 and 36, were arrested on Wednesday after allegedly fleeing the scene of the incident before being tracked down by detectives in Klerksdorp.
In a statement quoted by South African news outlet Independent Online (IOL), the police said the suspects are facing charges of
murder and
defeating the ends of justice following the death of the Nigerian national.
What Happened on the N12 Highway
According to the police account, the incident occurred at about
3:00am on Wednesday, December 17, during a traffic operation on the N12 highway.
It was alleged that Osinakachukwu Onu, who was reportedly
legally resident in South Africa, was chased by four traffic officers while they were conducting road operations.
During the pursuit, Onu was allegedly shot. His vehicle was later discovered stalled in the middle of the road on the opposite side of the highway.
Police officers who responded to the distress call reportedly arrived at the scene to find that the traffic officers involved had already left the location.
Firearms Seized, Investigation Ongoing
Preliminary investigations led detectives to a location within Klerksdorp, where the four suspects were traced and arrested.
Their official firearms were seized and are expected to undergo
forensic ballistic analysis as part of the ongoing investigation into the killing.
The suspects are expected to appear before the
Klerksdorp Magistrate’s Court on
Thursday, December 18.
Police React to Arrests
Reacting to the development, the North West Acting Provincial Commissioner,
Major General Ryno Naidoo, welcomed the arrests and praised the detectives for what he described as a swift and professional response to the case.
Renewed Concerns Over Attacks on Nigerians
The killing of Osinakachukwu Onu adds to a growing list of reported cases involving Nigerians who have lost their lives in South Africa under violent circumstances.
Earlier in July,
www.cjsoftflix.com
reported the brutal killing of two Nigerians, identified simply as
Austin and
Ayo, who were shot dead by unidentified gunmen in Durban.
The incident reportedly occurred on
Thursday, July 9, when armed men stormed Austin’s office at about 8:00pm, gained entry, and shot both men dead on the spot before fleeing.
As investigations into the latest killing continue, many Nigerians at home and abroad are once again calling for justice, accountability, and stronger protection for African migrants living in South Africa.
