Remi Tinubu sparks debate after asking Adeleke to stop singing at Ooni’s event

Oluremi Tinubu Faces Backlash for Interrupting Governor Adeleke at Ooni’s 10th Coronation Anniversary

Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has come under intense criticism after she interrupted Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, while he broke into a chant during his speech at the 10th coronation anniversary of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi. The moment, captured in a viral video, has sparked heated conversations across social media, with many accusing the First Lady of overstepping her boundaries. www.cjsoftflix.com reports.

The Viral Moment

Governor Adeleke, known for his energetic and musical style, stepped up to the podium to honour the monarch and congratulate the First Lady on her new title, Yeye Asiwaju Gbogbo Ile Oodua.

Rather than begin his speech immediately, Adeleke launched into a short chant, drawing laughter from sections of the audience.

However, Oluremi Tinubu approached the podium moments later, gestured politely and whispered to the governor to proceed with his speech.

The gesture, though subtle, generated widespread backlash online.

Critics Condemn the First Lady

Akintunde Bello, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on the Bureau of Social Services, criticized the First Lady, saying she should be “cautioned.”

Prominent journalist and chieftain of the African Democratic Congress, Dele Momodu, also condemned the action on Instagram, describing it as “bullying.”

  • “Remi Tinubu is not an elected officer of the government and has no constitutional role,” Momodu wrote.
  • He added that the First Lady “openly disgraced and embarrassed Adeleke before a global audience.”

On X (Twitter), user Hon. Rilwan (@rilwan_ola01) expressed anger, accusing the First Lady of undermining a democratically elected governor in front of dignitaries.

Others Defend Oluremi Tinubu

Despite the criticisms, some Nigerians believe the First Lady’s action was not only justified but respectful.

Dayo Fashola, an aide to former Osun State Governor Adegboyega Oyetola, described the interaction as “light-hearted.”

She explained that Oluremi Tinubu had earlier asked for protocol to be skipped during her own speech due to concerns over late-evening helicopter visibility for guests returning home.

Another Facebook user, Oyetunji Ayoade, defended the First Lady, writing:

  • “The highest respect the First Lady can give to Osun people is to stand up and inform him herself — and she did.”

Mixed Reactions Continue

The incident has sharply divided public opinion.

While critics argue that the First Lady overstepped her constitutional limits by interrupting a sitting governor, supporters maintain that her gesture was courteous and aimed at maintaining order and time management during the high-profile event.

The debate highlights ongoing conversations about protocol, respect for elected officeholders, and the evolving public expectations placed on Nigeria’s First Lady.
