PDP Leadership Meets Obasanjo in Abeokuta Amid South-West Power Reclamation Talks

A faction of the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), led by its chairman Alhaji Taminu Turaki, on Saturday held a closed-door meeting with former President Olusegun Obasanjo at his residence in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

Turaki arrived at the former president’s residence within the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library at about 11:38am, accompanied by notable party leaders including former governors of Niger State, Alhaji Muazu Babangida, and Plateau State, Senator Jonah Jang, alongside other senior PDP stakeholders.

After their arrival, the PDP leaders proceeded into a private meeting with Obasanjo, sparking political interest across the South-West and beyond. As of the time of filing this report, details of the discussions remain undisclosed.

Obasanjo’s History of Strategic PDP Engagements

This meeting adds to a series of high-level engagements between Obasanjo and PDP leaders ahead of major political milestones. In May 2022, ahead of the PDP presidential primaries, the former president met behind closed doors with three PDP governors in Abeokuta.

Those present at the time included Nyesom Wike (Rivers), Seyi Makinde (Oyo), Samuel Ortom (Benue), and former Cross River State Governor Donald Duke.

Earlier in January 2022, Obasanjo had clearly stated that he would not return to the PDP when a delegation led by then National Chairman Iyorchia Ayu and members of the party’s National Working Committee visited him at his Abeokuta residence.

“We Are Returning Power to the People” – Turaki Declares

Meanwhile, Turaki has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to internal democracy and people-driven leadership within the PDP. Speaking to party members and supporters at the PDP State Secretariat in Ogun State shortly after the visit to Obasanjo, Turaki declared that the party is repositioned for major electoral victories in the South-West.

According to a statement shared via the party’s official social media handles, Turaki said the PDP is on a clear path to reclaiming its dominance, beginning with the 2026 governorship elections in Ekiti and Osun States.

PDP Targets Total South-West Takeover

“Let me assure all our members and the good people of the South-West: We will win Ekiti, we will win Osun, and we are not stopping there,” Turaki stated confidently.

He went further to declare the party’s ambition to take over Ogun State, saying: “By the special grace of God and the unwavering support of our people, we will take over Ogun State.”

Turaki expressed appreciation to former President Obasanjo for his guidance, noting that the interaction has energized the party leadership and sharpened its strategic focus ahead of future elections.

Grassroots Mobilisation and Unity as Key Strategy

The PDP chairman emphasized that grassroots mobilization, renewed unity, and responsible governance form the backbone of the party’s South-West agenda. He stressed that the PDP’s renewed vision is anchored on economic revival and the delivery of democratic dividends to the people.

“Nigerians are tired of the current trajectory and are ready to return to the PDP,” Turaki added, expressing optimism about the party’s growing acceptance nationwide.

He concluded by reiterating the PDP’s commitment to internal democracy, describing it as essential to presenting Nigerians with a credible and formidable alternative to the ruling party in future elections.
