PDP leaders enlist Obasanjo for 2027 comeback
PDP Leaders Meet Obasanjo, Intensify Moves for Return to Power Ahead of 2027 Elections
Some leaders of the
Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Saturday met with former President
Olusegun Obasanjo as part of strategic efforts to reposition the opposition party for a possible return to power in the
2027 general elections.
The factional Chairman of the party,
Alhaji Kabiru Turaki, SAN, led members of his executive to the penthouse residence of the former president located within the
Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, Abeokuta, Ogun State. The meeting, held behind closed doors, reportedly lasted about
40 minutes.

Obasanjo Emphasises Discipline as PDP’s Survival Tool
Speaking with journalists after the meeting, the party’s National Publicity Secretary,
Ini Ememobong, disclosed that Obasanjo urged the new leadership to prioritise
strict discipline within the party to safeguard its future.
“It was a consultative meeting where we looked at the state of the nation, the state of democracy and the state of affairs. We had very fruitful discussions, and he tasked us to carry on and soldier on, but we should keep discipline as the core of our party administration,” Ememobong said.
According to him, the former president warned that indiscipline could destroy the party if not properly checked, stressing that effective party administration must be anchored on adherence to rules and shared values.
Ememobong added that the PDP leadership assured Obasanjo that his counsel would be taken seriously, noting that the party has already begun enforcing internal discipline to protect its unity and credibility.
Turaki: PDP Is Battle-Ready for 2027
Also speaking after the meeting, Turaki said the visit was aimed at seeking Obasanjo’s guidance, blessings, and support ahead of what he described as the
“gargantuan task” of dislodging the
All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.
He described Obasanjo as a respected elder statesman whose legacy of institution-building helped strengthen Nigeria’s democratic growth, adding that it was necessary for the new PDP leadership to tap into his wealth of experience.
Although Turaki admitted that defeating the APC in 2027 may not be easy, he said the discussions with Obasanjo had renewed the party’s confidence that victory was achievable.
“PDP is battle-ready for 2027, and as a mark of our readiness, we shall take over Ekiti State and follow it up with Osun State,” Turaki declared.
He added that reclaiming the two states would send a strong signal that the PDP is back on the rise and prepared to challenge what he described as the APC’s incompetence and maladministration.
‘Era of Impunity Is Over’ – PDP Chairman
Addressing party members later at the
PDP State Secretariat, Turaki urged members at home and in the diaspora to rally behind the new leadership, assuring them that internal democracy would be upheld.
“The era of impunity and shenanigans is over. Members will be free to pitch their tents with their preferred candidates during elections,” he said.
He further claimed that since the party’s recent convention in Ibadan, the APC has become increasingly uneasy, knowing that the political equation has shifted ahead of 2027.
Ogun PDP Says Opposition Ready to Defeat APC
The Ogun State Chairman of the party,
Abayomi Tella, also told journalists that party members were delighted to host the new national leadership barely three weeks after their emergence in Ibadan.
Tella warned that the PDP would not tolerate intimidation or harassment of voters in future elections, insisting that the 2027 polls would be about the people reclaiming their mandate.
“For 2027, the election will be about the people versus political parties. The people of Ogun State know the difference between good and bad governance,” he said.
He assured that what happened in the 2023 elections and recent by-elections would not repeat itself, stressing that PDP members and supporters would defend their constitutional right to vote and be voted for.
