Some leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Saturday met with former President Olusegun Obasanjo as part of strategic moves to reposition the opposition party for a possible return to power in the 2027 general elections, www.cjsoftflix.com reports.
The meeting was led by the factional Chairman of the PDP, Alhaji Kabiru Turaki, SAN, who, alongside members of his executive, visited Obasanjo at his penthouse residence within the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
The closed-door engagement between the PDP delegation and the former president reportedly lasted about 40 minutes, focusing on the state of the nation, democracy, and the future of the opposition party.
Members of the PDP leadership present at the meeting included several prominent party figures and former officeholders.
Speaking with www.cjsoftflix.com after the meeting, the PDP National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, revealed that Obasanjo strongly advised the party leadership to maintain strict discipline as a foundation for rebuilding the party and safeguarding its future.
According to Ememobong, the former president emphasised that indiscipline could destroy even the strongest political institutions if not checked early.
“It was a consultative meeting where we looked at the state of the nation, the state of democracy and the state of affairs. We had very fruitful discussions, and he tasked us to carry on and soldier on, but we should keep discipline as the core of our party administration,” Ememobong said.
“He practically and particularly said that we can’t allow indiscipline; that indiscipline destroys everything,” he added.
Ememobong explained that the party leadership assured Obasanjo of its commitment to strengthening internal discipline and ensuring strict adherence to PDP rules and values to protect unity and credibility.
Also speaking after the meeting, Alhaji Kabiru Turaki said the visit was aimed at seeking Obasanjo’s guidance and support ahead of what he described as the “gargantuan task” of dislodging the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.
Turaki described Obasanjo as a highly experienced elder statesman whose legacy of building strong democratic institutions remains relevant to Nigeria’s political future.
The former Minister of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs under President Goodluck Jonathan said the new PDP leadership felt it was important to draw from Obasanjo’s wealth of experience and secure his blessings at the early stage of its administration.
While admitting that defeating the APC in 2027 may not be easy, Turaki said the discussions with Obasanjo inspired confidence that the mission was achievable.
“PDP is battle-ready for 2027, and as a mark of our readiness, we shall take over Ekiti State and follow it up with Osun State,” Turaki declared.
“By the time we win these two states, we shall leave no one in doubt that the PDP is once again on the move and on the rise to chase out the APC government with all its incompetence and maladministration in 2027,” he added.
Addressing party members later at the PDP state secretariat, Turaki urged members across the country and in the diaspora to support the new leadership, stressing that the era of impunity and internal manipulation was over in the party.
He assured members that the PDP would uphold internal democracy, allowing individuals to freely support candidates of their choice during elections without intimidation.
“The truth is that the PDP is back and on the rise to take its rightful place in the democratic process of the country,” Turaki said.
Speaking separately, the Ogun State PDP Chairman, Abayomi Tella, said party members were excited to host the new national leadership barely weeks after their election in Ibadan.
Tella warned that the people of Ogun State would not tolerate harassment or intimidation during the 2027 elections, insisting that voters must be allowed to freely exercise their democratic rights.
“For 2027, the election will be about the people versus political parties. The people of Ogun State have tasted water and palm oil, and they know the difference,” he said.
He added that the PDP, alongside the people, was fully prepared for the 2027 polls, stressing that past electoral irregularities would not be repeated.
