Lagos Police Debunk Viral Video Claiming Officer Caught Stealing

The Lagos State Police Command has dismissed claims circulating on social media that an Inspector of Police was caught stealing in a viral video, describing the narration as “false and misleading”.

The footage, which went viral on Wednesday, showed a uniformed officer sitting on the ground with blood pouring from his mouth, surrounded by a crowd. Onlookers in the video repeatedly accused him of theft, chanting “Ole!” (thief). A yellow commercial bus marked “Ayedade” suggested the incident occurred along a busy Lagos axis.

Another officer can be seen attempting to intervene, pushing through the crowd to protect his colleague.

Official Police Statement

According to the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Adebisi, the Inspector, attached to the Lagos State Taskforce, was on official duty enforcing the State Government’s ban on illegal parking along Brown Street, Oshodi. The officer had stopped a motorist attempting to park wrongly, which allegedly led to a violent confrontation.

During the altercation, the Inspector accidentally discharged his firearm, and debris from the incident affected passersby. The mob gathered immediately, and the officer sustained serious injuries.

Disciplinary Actions and Arrests

The Lagos State Police confirmed that the Inspector has faced disciplinary actions for “unprofessional conduct”. Additionally, thirteen suspects captured assaulting the officer in the viral footage have been arrested and will be prosecuted once investigations are completed.
