NLC demands total rejection of tax law
NLC Urges Nigerians to Reject Distorted Tax Laws, Calls for Fair and Inclusive Fiscal Policies
The
Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has urged Nigerians to firmly reject what it described as
distorted or falsified tax laws, stressing that fiscal policies must be inclusive, transparent, and fair to all citizens, especially workers.
The labour union warned that laws affecting workers and the wider population should not be hurriedly enacted or manipulated for political interests, noting that such actions could inflict hardship on the majority of Nigerians.
Workers Must Unite to Protect Their Interests — NLC
In a statement titled
“Our Hope Lies in Collective Action”, the President of the NLC,
Joe Ajaero, underscored the need for workers to unite in safeguarding their interests, wages, pensions, and dignity.
Ajaero stressed that poorly crafted fiscal policies could have far-reaching consequences on workers’ livelihoods, calling on Nigerians to remain vigilant and actively participate in shaping laws that govern taxation and public finance.
Call for Social and Tax Justice
The NLC president emphasised that true development can only be achieved through
social justice and tax fairness, where every citizen enjoys access to basic social amenities and economic opportunities.
According to him, fiscal laws must reflect the collective aspirations of Nigerians rather than serving narrow political agendas.
“It is better to patiently craft a law that is broadly co-created and owned than rush into one filled with serious errors and outright political manipulations,” Ajaero said.
Key Demands by the NLC
The labour union outlined critical areas that must be prioritised in Nigeria’s fiscal and social framework:
- Access to quality healthcare for all citizens
- Provision of standard education without discrimination
- Fair wages and protection of workers’ rights
- A safe and secure environment where lives and property are protected
- Freedom for citizens to conduct lawful businesses without fear or intimidation
Unity Against Exploitative Policies
Ajaero further noted that the strength of Nigerian workers lies in unity and collective action, urging citizens to resist policies that deepen poverty, widen inequality, or exploit the masses.
He warned against divisions along ethnic, religious, or regional lines, stressing that such divisions weaken collective resistance against unjust policies and economic exploitation.
NLC’s Message to Nigerians
The NLC reaffirmed its commitment to defending workers and the broader Nigerian population against policies that undermine dignity, fairness, and economic justice.
The union called on Nigerians to remain engaged, informed, and united in demanding transparent governance and people-centred tax reforms that promote growth rather than suffering.
