NAF clarifies Burkina Faso airspace violation report

Nigerian Air Force Explains Precautionary Landing of C-130 Aircraft in Burkina Faso

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has clarified reports about the diversion of one of its C-130 aircraft to Burkina Faso, stating that the landing was a precautionary measure conducted in strict adherence to standard safety and international aviation protocols.

According to NAF, all personnel on board the aircraft, which landed in Bobo-Dioulasso, Burkina Faso, are safe and are being treated cordially by the Burkinabe authorities.

The aircraft was on a ferry mission to Portugal when the crew detected a technical concern shortly after taking off from Lagos on 8 December 2025. In line with international safety standards, the crew diverted to the nearest suitable airfield to address the situation.

Official Statement from NAF

Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, Director of Public Relations and Information, issued a statement on Tuesday clarifying the incident:

“The Nigerian Air Force wishes to clarify reports regarding the diversion of a NAF C-130 aircraft during its ferry mission to Portugal on 8 December 2025. Following takeoff from Lagos, the crew observed a technical concern which necessitated a precautionary landing in Bobo-Dioulasso, Burkina Faso, the nearest airfield, in accordance with standard safety procedures and international aviation protocols. The NAF crew is safe and has received cordial treatment from the host authorities.

Plans are ongoing to resume the mission as scheduled. The Nigerian Air Force appreciates the support received during this period and assures the public that NAF remains professionally committed to strict compliance with operational procedures and safety standards, ensuring the protection of its personnel while fulfilling its constitutional mandate.”

Clarifying Misreported Details

Earlier reports by media outlets suggested that the aircraft had been forced to land in Burkina Faso after allegedly violating its airspace. The NAF’s clarification emphasized that the landing was purely precautionary and not related to any airspace breach.

The incident highlights the Nigerian Air Force’s commitment to operational safety and adherence to international aviation protocols, ensuring that both personnel and aircraft are protected during missions.
