Measles death toll hits 153 in 11 months
Nigeria Records 19,213 Confirmed Measles Cases, 153 Deaths — NCDC
The
Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has disclosed that the country recorded a total of
19,213 confirmed measles cases out of
26,866 suspected cases across
507 Local Government Areas in the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) as of
November 2025.
The NCDC also confirmed that
153 deaths have been recorded from the highly infectious viral disease within the same period, according to its latest measles situation report released to journalists in Abuja on Tuesday.
What Is Measles?
Measles is an
acute and highly contagious viral disease characterised by symptoms such as fever, red skin rash, cough, and redness of the eyes.
The disease spreads through:
- Coughing and sneezing
- Direct contact with respiratory secretions
- Aerosols and close personal contact
The measles virus can remain active in the air or on surfaces for up to
two hours, with peak infectiousness occurring
four days before and four days after the rash appears.
November 2025 Measles Situation
According to the NCDC,
71 suspected measles cases were reported in November 2025, with five states accounting for more than half of the cases:
- Delta – 13 cases
- Kwara – 6 cases
- Bayelsa – 6 cases
- Jigawa – 6 cases
- Akwa Ibom – 5 cases
Out of the suspected cases reported in November:
- 1 case (1.41%) was confirmed
- 7 cases (9.86%) were discarded
- 63 cases (88.73%) were pending classification
A total of
47 LGAs across 20 states recorded at least one suspected case during the month, with
no deaths recorded from confirmed cases in November alone.
January–November 2025: States With Highest Cases
From January to November 2025, five states accounted for over
66% of all suspected measles cases nationwide:
- Borno – 7,968 cases
- Zamfara – 4,779 cases
- Yobe – 2,076 cases
- Bauchi – 1,574 cases
- Kebbi – 1,357 cases
Of the
26,866 suspected cases:
- 19,213 (71.51%) were confirmed
- 6,440 (23.78%) were discarded
- 1,213 (3.38%) remained pending
Children Most Affected
The NCDC report showed that children aged
9–59 months were the most affected, accounting for
9,399 confirmed cases (48.92%).
A total of
153 deaths were recorded among confirmed cases, translating to a
case fatality rate (CFR) of 0.8%.
Alarmingly,
14,801 confirmed cases (77.04%) involved children who had
not received any dose of the measles vaccine, described as “zero-dose” cases by the NCDC.
Measles Outbreak Status Nationwide
The NCDC disclosed that
188 LGAs across 27 states recorded measles outbreaks between January and November 2025.
As of the end of November:
- Only Eti-Osa LGA in Lagos State had an ongoing outbreak
- No new outbreak was reported in November
- 187 LGAs across 27 states had successfully ended their outbreaks
FG Launches Largest Vaccination Campaign in Africa
On October 6, Nigeria’s First Lady,
Senator Oluremi Tinubu, officially launched the
Measles-Rubella vaccine introduction and integrated immunisation campaign.
She said the campaign targets about
106 million children aged nine months to under 15 years across two phases, describing it as
the largest health initiative in Africa’s history.
The integrated campaign also includes:
- Vaccination against measles and rubella
- Polio immunisation
- HPV vaccine rollout for adolescent girls
