Nigeria Records 19,213 Confirmed Measles Cases, 153 Deaths — NCDC

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has disclosed that the country recorded a total of 19,213 confirmed measles cases out of 26,866 suspected cases across 507 Local Government Areas in the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) as of November 2025.

The NCDC also confirmed that 153 deaths have been recorded from the highly infectious viral disease within the same period, according to its latest measles situation report released to journalists in Abuja on Tuesday.

What Is Measles?

Measles is an acute and highly contagious viral disease characterised by symptoms such as fever, red skin rash, cough, and redness of the eyes.

The disease spreads through:

  • Coughing and sneezing
  • Direct contact with respiratory secretions
  • Aerosols and close personal contact

The measles virus can remain active in the air or on surfaces for up to two hours, with peak infectiousness occurring four days before and four days after the rash appears.

November 2025 Measles Situation

According to the NCDC, 71 suspected measles cases were reported in November 2025, with five states accounting for more than half of the cases:

  • Delta – 13 cases
  • Kwara – 6 cases
  • Bayelsa – 6 cases
  • Jigawa – 6 cases
  • Akwa Ibom – 5 cases

Out of the suspected cases reported in November:

  • 1 case (1.41%) was confirmed
  • 7 cases (9.86%) were discarded
  • 63 cases (88.73%) were pending classification

A total of 47 LGAs across 20 states recorded at least one suspected case during the month, with no deaths recorded from confirmed cases in November alone.

January–November 2025: States With Highest Cases

From January to November 2025, five states accounted for over 66% of all suspected measles cases nationwide:

  • Borno – 7,968 cases
  • Zamfara – 4,779 cases
  • Yobe – 2,076 cases
  • Bauchi – 1,574 cases
  • Kebbi – 1,357 cases

Of the 26,866 suspected cases:

  • 19,213 (71.51%) were confirmed
  • 6,440 (23.78%) were discarded
  • 1,213 (3.38%) remained pending

Children Most Affected

The NCDC report showed that children aged 9–59 months were the most affected, accounting for 9,399 confirmed cases (48.92%).

A total of 153 deaths were recorded among confirmed cases, translating to a case fatality rate (CFR) of 0.8%.

Alarmingly, 14,801 confirmed cases (77.04%) involved children who had not received any dose of the measles vaccine, described as “zero-dose” cases by the NCDC.

Measles Outbreak Status Nationwide

The NCDC disclosed that 188 LGAs across 27 states recorded measles outbreaks between January and November 2025.

As of the end of November:

  • Only Eti-Osa LGA in Lagos State had an ongoing outbreak
  • No new outbreak was reported in November
  • 187 LGAs across 27 states had successfully ended their outbreaks
