An elderly Islamic cleric, identified as Ladan Zubairu, was brutally killed on Monday morning at the Yusuf Garko Mosque located in the Maraba Quarters area of Kano State, www.cjsoftflix.com reports.
Eyewitness accounts gathered by www.cjsoftflix.com revealed that the suspected attacker was immediately chased by an angry mob after the incident. The suspect was subsequently lynched, while his residence was set ablaze, throwing the community into panic before security operatives intervened and restored order.
Speaking with journalists, the deceased’s son, Isa Kasim, narrated how his father had gone out early in the morning to perform his routine duty of calling Muslims to prayer (Adhan). According to him, the late cleric usually recited supplications briefly after the first call before making the second call to prayer.
“He had just finished the first call and was seated when someone entered the mosque with a weapon, grabbed him and slaughtered him. In short, his throat was slit,” Kasim recounted emotionally.
Kasim further disclosed that youths in the neighbourhood quickly mobilised after the attack and pursued the assailant, eventually killing him before he could escape.
“By the will of God, the attacker did not escape. Members of the community gathered, tracked him down and killed him,” he said.
Shockingly, Kasim revealed that after the suspect was killed, residents discovered his father’s severed throat wrapped in a nylon bag inside the attacker’s pocket.
Confirming the incident, the Kano State Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, said police officers swiftly intervened to prevent further violence and restore calm in the area.
“Our officers quickly intervened to restore calm and prevent further escalation. Normalcy has now returned to Maraba Quarters,” Kiyawa stated.
The police recovered the bodies of both the victim and the suspect and transported them to the Mohammed Abdullahi Wase Teaching Hospital for autopsy.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, has ordered a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the killing.
“We are committed to ensuring that anyone found culpable will face the full force of the law,” Kiyawa added, while appealing to residents to remain calm and cooperate with investigators.
This tragic killing is not the first of its kind in Kano State. In September, the family of another Islamic cleric, Salim Usman, protested his death in police custody, alleging he was tortured while detained by the State Criminal Investigation Department.
Usman, an imam from the Kuntau community in the Gwale Local Government Area of the Kano metropolis, reportedly died under controversial circumstances, raising concerns over the safety of clerics and the rule of law in the state.
