The founder of the **One Love Family**, Satguru Maharaj Ji, has declared his readiness to help secure the release of the incarcerated leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), **Nnamdi Kanu**, on the condition that the Biafra radio broadcast and the controversial sit-at-home order are completely halted. Maharaj Ji made this known during an interview on his temple’s in-house radio on Wednesday.
According to Maharaj Ji, Nnamdi Kanu remains culpable of the terrorism charges brought against him, noting that Nigeria’s constitution prescribes the death penalty for such offences. He stressed that Kanu narrowly escaped such a sentence through “grace,” adding that political negotiation is now the only viable route to his release.
He said: “By the accusations, it is always going to be death, looking at the level of crimes attached to him. Anybody who is accused of terrorism is sentenced to death. It is only out of grace that Kanu was able to escape.”
Maharaj Ji insisted that anyone advocating for Kanu’s pardon must take “positive steps” to show commitment. His conditions include:
He added that once these conditions are fulfilled, he knows how to “watch it out” to ensure that Kanu is eventually released through political intervention.
The spiritual leader joins prominent voices such as Abia State Governor **Alex Otti**, activist **Omoyele Sowore**, and several South-East stakeholders pushing for a political settlement in Kanu’s case. Maharaj Ji said residents of the region should remain hopeful, affirming that “all hope is not lost.”
Earlier on Tuesday, Governor Otti visited Nnamdi Kanu at the Sokoto prison facility where he is currently serving his sentence. Shortly after, he met with President Bola Tinubu at the State House, Abuja—a move widely interpreted as part of ongoing discussions aimed at securing Kanu’s release.
Nnamdi Kanu was handed a life sentence instead of the death penalty after Justice James Omotosho convicted him on seven terrorism-related charges. The breakdown of his sentence includes:
Justice Omotosho delivered the ruling after finding Kanu guilty of all charges presented before the court.
With increasing political engagement and growing pressure from South-East leaders, the path to Nnamdi Kanu’s release appears to be shifting from the courtroom to political negotiation. Whether these conditions set by Satguru Maharaj Ji will be met remains to be seen, but one thing is clear—momentum is building around efforts to free the IPOB leader.
