My Path to Presidency Was Filled With Obstacles, God Made It Possible – Tinubu
President
Bola Ahmed Tinubu has described his journey to the presidency as one marked by severe obstacles, stressing that perseverance and divine intervention played a major role in his emergence as Nigeria’s leader.
The President made the remarks on Friday while speaking at the
15th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the All Progressives Congress (APC) held at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja.
Tinubu Recalls Challenges Ahead of 2023 Elections
Reflecting on the build-up to the
2023 general election, Tinubu said both the nation and his campaign faced immense economic and social pressures that tested the resilience of Nigerians.
According to him, the election period coincided with multiple crises, including food shortages, the controversial currency redesign policy, and widespread fuel scarcity that resulted in long queues at petrol stations across the country.
He noted that many Nigerians endured extreme hardship, with some unable to afford even a single meal per day, describing the period as one of the most trying moments in the nation’s democratic history.
“I Faced Obstacles on My Path to the Presidency”
President Tinubu acknowledged that the challenges he encountered were enormous and could have derailed the electoral process.
He said:
“I faced obstacles on my path to the presidency.”
Despite the setbacks, the President attributed his victory to divine intervention, insisting that his emergence was not by human effort alone but by the will of God.
“God brought us here. I am a symbol of that God because, without Him, I wouldn’t be here. There was a wildfire, currency redesign chaos, and endless queues at filling stations. People died from hunger due to cash scarcity, all for one election,” Tinubu said.
Call for Faith, Gratitude, and Democratic Stability
The President stressed that the difficult journey underscored the importance of gratitude and faith, urging Nigerians who believe in God to remain thankful despite ongoing national challenges.
He also called for unity, tolerance, and resilience in sustaining Nigeria’s democracy, warning that the nation must not allow its democratic system to fail.
“We must continue to be resolute that this democracy we have taken into our hands must not fail,” he said.
Tinubu Emphasises Inclusive Leadership
Emphasising the need for accommodation and inclusiveness in governance, Tinubu said leadership requires making room for others, even in difficult times.
Using a metaphor, the President urged leaders and citizens to show compassion to one another, noting that mutual support strengthens society and promotes national cohesion.
He also warned against the imposition of will in governance, describing it as unhealthy for democracy, and reiterated his belief that leadership positions are ultimately determined by God.
“God creates the opportunity for individuals, and if God says you will be there, you will be there,” Tinubu added.
