Oluremi Tinubu Breaks Silence on Viral Adeleke Video, Describes Reactions as “Needless Controversy”
Nigeria’s First Lady,

Ademola Adeleke, describing the uproar as a “needless controversy.” Her remarks were contained in a statement posted on her official Facebook page on Tuesday.

According to the First Lady, critics often magnify insignificant moments and create distractions around leadership. She stated:
“Those entrusted with leadership understand their duties and how to steer the affairs of society. More often, it is the followers and critics who scrutinise every step, amplify minor missteps, and turn them into needless controversy. Ọṣun lè tèǹtẹ̀ – Osun is ahead.”
The Viral Moment That Sparked Debate
The online storm began after a viral video from the
10th coronation anniversary of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, showed Governor Adeleke pausing mid-speech after briefly breaking into a song.
In the clip, Mrs Tinubu approached the podium, gestured toward him, and whispered something to him — a brief moment that quickly spread across social media, sparking massive debates and criticism.
The First Lady’s statement marks her first public reaction since the video dominated online conversations.
Critics Call the Gesture Disrespectful
Reactions were mixed, with some accusing Mrs Tinubu of disrespecting an elected governor.
Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on the Bureau of Social Services,
Akintunde Bello, argued that the First Lady should be cautioned. According to him, her gesture was inappropriate and undermined Governor Adeleke.
Similarly, African Democratic Congress (ADC) chieftain
Dele Momodu condemned the act, describing it as bullying and insisting that Mrs Tinubu “openly disgraced and embarrassed Adeleke before a global audience.”
Supporters Defend the First Lady
Not everyone agreed with the backlash. Some individuals took to social media to defend Mrs Tinubu, describing the exchange as harmless.
Dayo Fashola, an aide to former Osun State Governor Adegboyega Oyetola, wrote that the moment was lighthearted and blown out of context.
Another user,
Oyetunji Ayoade, argued that the First Lady showed respect by personally approaching the governor rather than causing a bigger scene.
Silence from Adeleke and the Presidency
As discussions continue across social media platforms, neither Governor Adeleke nor the Presidency has released any additional comments on the matter.
The incident remains one of the most talked-about topics online this week, further highlighting the intense scrutiny placed on political figures in Nigeria.
