The Osun State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) witnessed a tense and dramatic governorship primary on Tuesday as
Adedamola Adebayo emerged the party’s candidate for the 2026 Osun governorship election. The election, held in Osogbo, recorded
919 votes for Adebayo out of 957 accredited delegates.
Announcing the result, the chairman of the PDP primary committee,
Humphrey Abba, declared Adebayo the winner, stating that 20 votes were void. He also noted that one aspirant, Governor Ademola Adeleke, had withdrawn earlier but his name remained on the ballot, meaning any vote cast for him would be invalid.
Governor Adeleke, Top PDP Leaders Absent
One of the biggest surprises of the day was the absence of
Governor Ademola Adeleke and other prominent PDP leaders from the venue. Adeleke had earlier resigned from the PDP over unresolved issues in the party’s national leadership, sparking confusion and tension ahead of the primary.
His resignation letter, obtained by www.cjsoftflix.com
, cited the ongoing crisis within the PDP national structure as the reason for his exit. However, despite his withdrawal, his name still appeared on the ballot.
Violence Erupts as Osun Assembly Speaker Storms Venue
Shortly after voting ended, the Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly,
Adewale Egbedun, led several lawmakers to the venue, where a confrontation ensued. In a viral video seen by www.cjsoftflix.com
, Egbedun was engaged in a heated exchange with an INEC official before a suspected thug attacked the official.
Another video captured a bus filled with people believed to have been brought from Oyo State. They were intercepted and assaulted by a mob before being handed over to security operatives at the House of Assembly Police Post.
“We Are Not PDP Members” – Oyo PMS Driver Speaks
A driver identified as
Wakili Akinremi told journalists they were in Osogbo for a union meeting, not for the PDP primary. According to him, they were park managers invited for a zonal NURTW meeting and were mistakenly caught up in the political chaos.
He explained that they were lodging at a hotel near the primary venue and had simply stopped to relax with drinks when the mob attacked.
Egbedun Accuses Governor Seyi Makinde of Interference
Speaking to reporters, Speaker Egbedun accused Oyo State Governor,
Seyi Makinde, of meddling in Osun PDP affairs. He warned that Osun PDP would not tolerate external interference, especially as political activities heat up ahead of the 2026 governorship election.
Egbedun stated:
“If Governor Seyi Makinde is desperate to become President in 2027, he should use another state, not Osun. We won’t accept this again.”
Tight Security and Factional Conflicts
The primary took place under heavy security, with officers from the DSS, police, and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps securing all access points.
The exercise itself was marred by conflicting directives from factional PDP national officials. While Theophilus Shan insisted the primary must hold, Umar Bature from a rival faction announced its postponement, deepening confusion among party members.
INEC Deadline Approaches
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has given PDP and other parties until
December 15, 2025 to submit their candidates for the August 8, 2026 Osun governorship election.
Despite the controversies surrounding the primary, Adebayo Adedamola now stands as the PDP’s official flagbearer—pending any possible legal challenges.
